Nancy Hall was born in Victoria, Australia in 1854 – the daughter of Andrew Hall and Mary Mabin.
She came to Otago with her family in 1864 on the City of Hobart and they settled at Thornbury near Riverton in Southland where they had a farm.
She married Thomas Gilmour, a rabbit agent, in 1878 and they had eight children.
When Nancy signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Queenstown.
They later moved to Riverton then to Balclutha where Thomas worked as a stock inspector.
Nancy died on 6 March 1907 at Balclutha and Thomas re-married in 1910.
Thomas died in 1918 – they are both buried in the Balclutha Cemetery.
Nancy’s obituary said 'by her kindly disposition, and many estimable qualities endeared herself to all who had the pleasure of her acquaintance'.
