Emma Jessie Stuart Sandilands was born in 1864 in New Zealand – the daughter of Richard Sandilands and Ann Bremner.
In 1890 Emma married Thomas Henry Rix, a compositor and lay preacher.
Thomas was a divorcee with three children. Emma and Thomas had a daughter together and when Emma signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Opoho Rd, Dunedin.
Thomas died at Dunedin Hospital in 1923 and Emma died on 5 June 1939, they are buried in the family grave in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
