Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Elizabeth Ada Walton was born in 1865 in Liverpool, England – the daughter of Abraham Walton, an estate agent, and Sarah Ann Tunstall.

She emigrated to Otago with her family in the 1870s and they settled in Dunedin where her father died in 1876.

Her mother re-married in 1879 and a few years later they moved to Mataura where Elizabeth married John Hamilton Tennant, a waterproof manufacturer, on 18 April 1892. They had a son in 1898.

When Elizabeth signed the suffrage petition they were living in Clyde St in Roslyn, Dunedin.

John died in 1905, shortly after a visit to the 'Old Country' and Elizbeth died at Orokonui Home on 8 September 1938 – they are buried together in the Northern Cemetery.
