Rachel Spence Pollock was born in New Zealand in 1862 – the daughter of James Pollock and Agnes Duncan.

She married George Duncan Thom, an engineer, in 1882. They had seven children, one of who died in infancy.

When Rachel signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Macrae St, Mornington, Dunedin.

George died in 1932 and Rachel died on 23 June 1945, they are buried in the family grave in the Southern Cemetery.
