Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Maria Allen was born on June 15th 1829 in St Austell, Cornwall – the daughter of Richard Allen, a tin miner, and Patience Warne.

Maria emigrated to South Australia where she married James Thomas, a miner and widower with five children, on 20 October 1869 at Wallaroo Mine.

They had a son in 1872 and shortly after they sailed for Melbourne then to New Zealand.

The family settled in Dunedin where James worked as a grocer and when Maria signed the suffrage petition they were living in Lawrence St, Mornington.

James died in 1899 and Maria died at her home on 25 October 1908 – they are both buried in the Southern Cemetery.
