Mary Mainland was born on 16 May 1843 in the Orkney Islands in Scotland – the daughter of James Mainland, a shoemaker, and Ann Rendall.
She married Hugh Trainor, a labourer, on 27 October 1871 in Dunedin and they had six children, two who died in childhood.
When Mary signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Elm Row, Dunedin.
Mary died at her home on 3 March 1903 and Hugh died in 1904. They are buried in the family grave in the Northern Cemetery.
