Biography contributed by Katheriine Blakeley
Mary O’Connell was born about 1844.
She married Stephen Tubman, a tinsmith and plumber, in 1870 in New Zealand and they had six children.
In 1882 their nine-year-old son Stephen died when he fell down a bank while picking berries and hit his head and, in 1886, their five-year-old daughter Isabella also died.
Stephen died at their home in South Dunedin in 1888 and, when Mary signed the suffrage petition, she was living in Broughton St in Kensington.
She died at her daughter’s home in Dunedin on 10 July 1919 and is buried with Stephen in the family grave in the Southern Cemetery.
