Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Eliza Allden was born in 1855 in Staffordshire – the daughter of Thomas Allden, a labourer, and Ellen Baker.

She married William Turley in 1872 and they had a daughter before they emigrated to Westland in 1875 on the Caroline

They settled in Greymouth where William worked as a wharf labourer and they had a further three children.

Eliza signed the suffrage petition in Greymouth. In 1900 she went for a visit to her daughter in Napier. On 21 August they were attending a 'Roman Catholic social at the Gaiety Theatre' when Eliza died suddenly.

William died in Greymouth in 1907 – they are buried together in the Karoro Cemetery.
