Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Ellen Robertson was born in 1858 in Victoria, Australia – the daughter of Robert Jones Bernard Robertson, a fireman, and Jane Elizabeth Maslen. She emigrated to New Zealand with her parents about 1861.

On 25 December 1884 she married Thomas Henry Ufton, an engineer, at the Central Fire Brigade Station, Dunedin - her father was Captain of the Fire Brigade at the time.

They had four children and when she signed the suffrage petition Ellen was living with her family at Neidpath Rd, Mornington, Dunedin.

Ellen died on 14 September 1911. Thomas re-married and he died in 1937. They are buried together in the Southern Cemetery.
