She came to New Zealand in the early 1860s and she married William Evans, a sailmaker, on 9 June 1863 in the Tapanui parish.
They had 11 children and they lived, at first, at Evansdale north of Dunedin.
In 1882 their home was destroyed by fire due to a defective chimnery.
After this the family moved to Dunedin and when Jessie signed the suffrage pettion they were living in Maria Rd, South Dunedin.
Three of their sons died between 1895 and 1904.
