Sarah Jane Matthews was born in 1869 in New Zealand – the daughter of Harry Matthews, a printer, and Sarah Jane Fraer.
She married William Lyall Scott, a produce merchant, on 10 June 1891 at Trinity Church in Dunedin.
They do not appear to have had any children and when Sarah signed the suffrage petition they were living in Park Street, Kensington.
They later moved to Palmerston North and Whanganui before retiring to Wellington where William died in 1932 and Sarah died on 18 July 1947 – they are buried together in the Karori Cemetery.
