Gertrude Mary Tyrrell was born in 1861 in London, England – the daughter of Thomas Tyrrell, a baker, and Emma Lydia Thomas. (See 163 E L Tyrrell)
She emigrated to Otago on the Canterbury with her family in 1880 and they settled in Dunedin.
She married William Thomas Milward, a signwriter, in 1883 and they had five children.
When Gertrude signed the sufffrage petition the family were living at Calton, North East Valley.
William died in 1927 and Gertrude died on 1 October 1941, they are buried together in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
