Matilda Deans McLean was born in 1865 in Waikouaiti, north of Dunedin – the daughter of William McLean and Elizabeth Deans.
She married William Fleming Turnbull, an overseer, on 22 March 1887 in Dunedin.
They had three children and when Matilda signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Belleknowes, Dunedin.
Matilda died on 5 August 1913, at the age of 45, she is buried in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
William re-married in 1915 and he died in 1939 – he was cremated and his ashes scattered.
