Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Agnes Wyllie was born about 1821 in Scotland – she married William White, a shoemaker, about 1840 and they had three children before they boarded the Ajax in 1848 bound for New Zealand. They landed in Otago in January 1849 with four children as a son was born on board.

A further three children were born in New Zealand.

The family lived in Waihola, south of Dunedin, before moving to Tapanui about 1870 where Agnes signed the suffrage petition.

William died at their home 'Holmhead', Tapanui in 1896 and Agnes died on 22 December 1905, aged 86.

They are buried in the family grave in the Tapanui Cemetery.
