Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Joan Adams was born on 23 October 1840 in Lanarkshire, Scotland – the daughter of John Adams and Magdalene McDonald.

She married Archibald Walker on 9 July 1862 in Glasgow and soon after they emigrated to New Zealand.

They had 10 children and lived, at first, in Great King St, Dunedin where Archibald ran a store with a bottle licence.

In 1880 the store was advertised for sale and when Joan signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Leith St and Archibald was working as a storeman.

Joan died at her home in Castle St on 16 August 1908 and Archibald died in 1909, they are buried in the family grave in the Northern Cemetery.
