Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Charlotte Jane Smith was born about 1828 in London.

She married blacksmith, William Walters, in 1853 and they had six children before the family emigrated to Otago in 1874 on the Tweed.

They settled in Maryhill, in Mornington, Dunedin where Charlotte signed the suffrage petition.

William died in 1896 at the Naseby Hospital and Charlotte died at her daughter’s home in Invercargill on 4 August 1902 – they are buried together in the Southern Cemetery.
