Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley.

Sophia Ely was born in 1843 in Sevenoaks, Kent, England – the daughter of William Ely, a cordwainer, and Frances Simmons.

She appears to have married Robert Warrington, a farm labourer, in the late 1860s and they had a son in 1870 in London.

In 1871 they emigrated to New Zealand and settled in Dunedin where they had a further 7 children, 3 who died in infancy or early childhood.

When Sophia signed the suffrage petition they were living in Maryhill Terrace, Mornington.

She died at her home on June 4th 1905 and Robert died in 1931. They are buried in the family grave in the Southern Cemetery.
