Janet/Jessie Telfer Finlay was born around 1843 in Glasgow, Scotland. She married John Watson, a pattern maker on 4 January 1864 in Glasgow. They had five children in Glasgow before they emigrated to Otago in about 1879. Another two children were born in New Zealand and the family lived in Eskville St, Musselburgh, Dunedin.
Jessie died on 14 June 1913 and John died in 1924. They are buried in the family grave in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
