Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Annie Kelly was born about 1866 – possibly the daughter of Thomas and Isabella Kelly.

She had a daughter with, baker and pastrycook, Samuel Wootton in 1887 before they married in Roxburgh in 1889.

They had a further three children, one who died in infancy and lived in Roxburgh before moving to Dunedin in 1892 where Annie signed the suffrage petition in South Dunedin.

In 1906 the family moved to Christchurch, then a year later to Gisborne.

Samuel obtained the licence for the Roseland Hotel at Makaraka in 1913 but gave up the business two years later.

In 1928 Annie, who was running a business as pastrycook was declared bankrupt.

Samuel died in 1938 and Annie died on 31 January 1953 – they are buried together in the Taruheru Cemetery, Gisborne.
