Helen/Nellie Newey was born in 1868. She was the daughter of Henry Newey, a hotelkeeper and Jessie Kennedy. When Nellie was born the family were living at Kakanui in North Otago, they later moved to Dunedin. In 1893 Nellie was living in Albany St working as a tailoress.

In the 1920s Nellie served as secretary of the Dunedin branch of the British Israel Association which was formed 'to procure such information as may lead to the development and recognition of the fact that the British nation is identical with the ancient Kingdom of Israel.'

Nellie died on 17 August 1947 and is buried with her sister Daisy in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
