Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Ellen/Nellie Mary Campbell was born on 30 June 1866 in Rattray St, Dunedin – the daughter of George Hyde Campbell, a china and glass importer, and Mary O’Mullane.

Nellie attended Otago Girls High School and the University of Otago, training as a teacher.

She taught at Otago Girls High School until her death on 20 July 1912.

The school report said she “had endeared herself to the staff and the pupils by her usefulness, unfailing cheerfulness, her enthusiasm for her work, and for all that pertained to the school.”

She is buried with her parents and sister in the Northern Cemetery.
