Margaret Helen James was born in 1867 in New Zealand, the daughter of William James, a cabinetmaker, and Euphemia Farmer.

She married Robert Pearson in 1891 and they had five children.

When Nellie signed the suffrage petition they were living in Waikouaiti, north of Dunedin.

They moved to Wellington in 1898 where Robert worked as a boot importer before they moved to Auckland.

Robert died in Auckland in 1921. He is buried in the Purewa Cemetery.

Nellie moved back to Wellington after Robert’s death.

She was active in the St Johns’ Ambulance Association and was awarded a “Serving Sister” award in 1935.

She died on December 18th 1948 in Wellington. She was cremated at the Karori Crematorium.
