Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Patricia Jane Thomson was born in 1857 in Auckland – the daughter of Peter Heywood Thomson, a seaman, and Margaret Beattie.
Shortly after Patricia’s birth the family came to Otago where her father worked for Johnny Jones.
Patricia married Lachlan MacDonald, a ship’s carpenter, on 11 July 1877 at her sister’s home in Mansford Bay, Port Chalmers.
They had 11 children and when Patricia signed the suffrage petition they were living in Port Chalmers.
Lachlan died in 1907 – 'flags were flown at half-mast yesterday as a token of respect'.
Patricia died in Dunedin on 17 June 1944 – they are buried together in the Port Chalmers New Cemetery.
