Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Prudence Christie Smith was born on 6 June 1860 in Prestonpans, Haddingtonshire, Scotland – the daughter of Robert Thomas Smith, a baker, and Margaret Christie.

The family emigrated to Otago in 1861 on the Storm Cloud and they settled in Dunedin.

Prudence married Andrew Wood, a plumber, on 18 April 1884 and they had three daughters.

Prudence signed the suffrage petition in Belleknowes.

She died at their home on 15 July 1950 and Andrew died in 1953.

They are buried in the family grave in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
