Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Rebecca Ann Sharp was born about 1874 in England – the daughter of James Sharp, a shoemaker, and Sarah Ann Carvell.

She emigrated to Otago with her parents in 1875 on the William Davie and they settled in Dunedin.

Rebecca signed the suffrage petition at George St, Caversham.

She married John McFarlane Mains, an engine driver and dredgehand, in 1905 and they had five children.

The family lived in Waikaka in Southland before they moved back to Dunedin.

John died in Dunedin in 1935 and Rebecca died on 16 June 1950 – they are buried together in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
