Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Rosa Hannah Bates was born in 1872 in England – the daughter of Charles Bates, a farm bailiff, and Elizabeth Shorthose. (See 41 Mrs Bates)

She emigrated to Otago with her family in 1873 on the Edwin Fox and they settled in Dunedin.

When Rosa signed the suffrage petition she was living with her family in Sydney St, Caversham working as a dressmaker.

She married carpenter Samuel White in 1901 and they had three children.

Rosa died on 25 January 1917 and Samuel died in 1946 – they are buried together in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
