Roseanna Gain was born c 1842.
She came to New Zealandon the Araby Maid which sailed from London on 22 January 1880, arriving in Port Chalmers on 24 April 1880. Also on the ship was an Elizabeth Gain – their relationship if any is not known.
Roseanna Gain married Richard Champion, son of George and Sarah Champion in 1880 in Waimate. This was Richard’s second marriage, his first wife Ann nee Grigson died in 1878.
The Electoral Rolls for 1896 and 1900 record Roseanna and Richard, living on freehold section 17030, Waimate. Roseanna occupation was domestic duties. Richard was a farmer.
In 1912 Richard and Roseanna Champion were living in Leonard Street, Waimate.
Roseanna Champion died inChristchurchon 14 May 1912 age 70 years and is buried in the Waimate Old cemetery, Free Ground, Plot 0015FG000445.
Richard Champion remarried in 1912 to Jessie Delve. He died on the 28 November 1914 and is buried in the Waimate Old cemetery.
Champions Road, offTimaru Road, Waimate is named after Richard Champion. He was one of the earliest settlers in the town and district.
