Biography contributed by Bernadette Siebert

Rose Elizabeth Gilberd was born 16 Sep 1871 in Napier, the second of six children of James Brouse and his wife Ann Maria. James had a soapmaking business that he started in Auckland, then moved to Napier, and finally to Whanganui.

In Napier, she must have met Angus Daniel Grant and they married there in 1889. Angus was son of James and Ann nee McLeod, an old Mahurangi family. On leaving home as a young man Angus first went to Napier, returning later to Mahurangi and entering the employ of the Wilson's Cement Company. He remained with the company about 20 years as head carpenter. Rose and Angus had six children born at Mahurangi Heads.

  • Harold Brouse Grant (1889–1917)
  • Bruce McLeod Grant (1891–1975)
  • Sadie Ann Grant (1897–1985)
  • James Gordon Grant (1900–1982)
  • Lilly Elizabeth Grant (1902–?)
  • Angus Dingwall Grant (1911–1980)

Angus then moved the family to Manunui, where with a relative he started a pumice business. After about two years there, his health began to fail, and he returned to Mahurangi seriously ill suffering from valvular disease of the heart, and gradually became worse. In 1917 Rose and Angus’ eldest son died of sickness while on active service in France during the First World War. Angus, himself died the next year, 1918, in his 60th year. His obituary reported that, 'He bore his sufferings with great fortitude and cheerfulness, and was quite resigned to await the end.' He made his will less than two weeks before he died, leaving his 40 acre farm at the Mahurangi Heads to his eldest (remaining) son Bruce, and the rest and residue to his wife. His estate was valued at 1200 pounds.

Rose lived on until 1929. She moved to Auckland where she passed away after a long illness. Rose and Angus are both buried in the Warkworth Cemetery. Her probate left everything equally to her surviving children.

Rose Grant is the daughter-in-law of 379 Ann GRANT
