Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Sarah Annette Smith was born in 1857 in London, England – the daughter of William Seth Smith, a farmer, and Catherine Charlotte Cartwright.

At some stage the family’s name became hyphenated.

Sarah came to New Zealand and when she signed the suffrage petition she was living in Avon St, Oamaru with her brother Frank and sister-in-law Constance. (See 293 Constance M Seth-Smith) Sarah married Alexander McCaw, a farm overseer, on 3 July 1893 in Dunedin.

They lived at Ngapara near Oamaru and had three sons.

Sarah died on 12 November 1926 at her home 'Windsor Downs', Hakataramea and Alexander died in 1938, they are buried together in the Oamaru Old Cemetery.
