Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Sarah Palmer was born about 1847 in England.

She came to New Zealand about 1860 and she married Samuel Lister Carnell in 1872.

They lived in Dunedin where they had three daughters, one who died in infancy.

Samuel died in 1877 – he is buried with their daughter in the Northern Cemetery.

Sarah re-married on 30 June 1879 to William Birchall, a bricklayer. They had six children and when Sarah signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Leith Walk, North East Valley. William died in 1926 and Sarah died on 8 October 1940 – they are buried together in the Northern Cemetery.
