Sarah Elizabeth Cawthorn was born on October 14th 1843 in Hamilton, Tasmania, Australia, The daughter of Henry David Cawthorn and Ruth Fincher.
She came to New Zealand and married Edward James Cockerill, a labourer, in 1875.
They had 4 daughters, and when Sarah signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Palmerston in North Otago.
They later moved to Upper Plain, Masterton where Sarah died on October 20th 1929 and Edward died in 1940.
They are buried together in the Archer Street Cemetery, Masterton.
