Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Sarah Swannell was born about 1843 in England.

She married James Foster, a printer, in 1864 in London and they had five children before they emigrated to Otago in 1874 on the Buckinghamshire.

They settled in Dunedin where they had a further five children and when Sarah signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Maitland Street.

Sarah died at their home on 24 October 1909 and James died in 1916 in Invercargill – they are buried together in the Southern Cemetery.
