Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Susannah Webber was born in 1851 in Devon, England – the daughter of William Webber, a draper and grocer, and Mary Ann Rice.

She married William Greenslade in 1874 – at the same time her sister Ellen married William’s brother Frank.

Shortly after their wedding the two couples emigrated to Nelson on the Ocean Mail and settled in South Beach, Greymouth.

William and his brother opened a tannery business and William and Susannah had six children, one who died in infancy.

Susannah signed the suffrage petition in Greymouth, she died on 2 June 1923.

William died in 1928 – they are buried together in the Karoro Cemetery.
