Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Sarah Lowery was born about 1837 in Antrim, Ireland – the daughter of James Lowery, a farmer.

She married William Gregg, a grocer, on 26 April 1877 in Ballymena, Antrim and they had a daughter the following year.

The family emigrated to New Zealand soon after and their son was born there in 1881.

They settled in Milton where William worked as a bootmaker and where Sarah signed the suffrage petition.

In the 1900s they moved to Dunedin where William worked as a leather merchant and where Sarah died on 6 May 1915.

She is buried in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.

William re-married in 1919 and moved to Waimate – he died there in 1936 and is buried in the Waimate Cemetery.
