Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Sophia King was born in 1846 in Hove, Sussex, England – the daughter of Thomas King, a brickmaker, and Sophia Smith.

She married Daniel Harland, a gas works stoker, in 1868 and they had four children, two who died in infancy.

The family emigrated to Otago in 1874 on the Corona where their young daughter died the following year.

They had a further six children and when Sophia signed the suffrage petition they were living in Andersons Bay, Dunedin.

Sophia died on 1 March 1905 and Daniel died in 1925 – they are buried together in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.

Katherine, You have done a great job with this entry. Thank you.
I am the great grand daughter of Sophia King Harland and the keeper of her grave at Andersons Bay where my mother's ashes were interned some years ago.
Interesting that Sophia was a sufragette as I have a strong minded daughter Claire who will now celebrate her heritage. (I almost called her sophia). I think that knowing these things is very important. It is about who we are.
We have a framed framed formal photo of Sophia and Daniel Harland on the day of my grandmother Elizabeth Harland' marriage to Reginald Gray. I will try and upload it.
