Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Sophia King was born in 1846 in Hove, Sussex, England – the daughter of Thomas King, a brickmaker, and Sophia Smith.
She married Daniel Harland, a gas works stoker, in 1868 and they had four children, two who died in infancy.
The family emigrated to Otago in 1874 on the Corona where their young daughter died the following year.
They had a further six children and when Sophia signed the suffrage petition they were living in Andersons Bay, Dunedin.
Sophia died on 1 March 1905 and Daniel died in 1925 – they are buried together in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
