Sarah Jane Batson was born about 1830.

She emigrated to New Zealand, and married James Black, a contractor, in 1864.

They had eight children, three who died in infancy. They lived in Waikouaiti where Sarah signed the suffrage petition.

She died at her home on June 14th 1914, and James died in 1922. They are buried with their young children in the St John’s Anglican Cemetery, Waikouaiti.
