Selina Ridgway was born in Fryerstown, Victoria, Australia in 1861 – the daughter of Samuel Hatfield Ridgway and Mary Ann Harrop.

She came to New Zealand where she married school teacher, and fellow Victorian, Alexander McLean on 22 March 1883 in Dunedin.

They had five children and when Selina signed the suffrage petition the family were living in No 6 Street, Opoho.

In 1909 they moved to Alexandra where Alexander was headmaster at the local school.

He died in 1922 and is buried in the Cromwell Cemetery.

Selina later moved to Wellington then to Martinborough where she died on 8 February 1947 – she is buried in the Martinborough Cemetery.
