Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Sarah Annie Wade was born about 1836.

She married Charles Francombe Roberts, a miner, in 1852 in Victoria, Australia & they had six children, three who died in infancy.

In 1863 the family sailed for Otago on the Lahore – they settled in Dunedin where their eldest son died the following year.

They had a further seven children – in 1867 the family were living at Mount Ida when their two-year-old son Louis drowned.

In about 1880 they moved to Livingstone where Sarah signed the suffrage petition.

In later years they retired to Oamaru where Charles died in 1909.

Sarah died on 29 August 1919 at her daughter’s home in Waimate, she is buried with Charles in the Old Oamaru Cemetery.
