Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Sarah Elliot was born in 1834 in Sheffield, Yorkshire – the daughter of William Elliott, a cupola tenter, and Ann Parkin.
She married miner Thomas Rose on 16 August 1852 in the Sheffield parish church and they had two daughters, one who died in infancy.
In 1856 the family boarded the Narvarino bound for South Australia. Their son was born on the voyage and the family moved to Victoria soon after.
Their two children died sometime in the next few years and they had a further five children, one of these children also died young.
In 1866 the family sailed for Greymouth on the Alhambra and settled in Cobden where their final five children were born and where Sarah signed the suffrage petition.
Thomas died at their home in Cobden in 1911 and Sarah died two years later on 18 October – they are buried together in the Karoro Cemetery.
