Sarah Cockburn was born on 7 August 1864 in Abbey St Bathans, Berwickshire, Scotland – the daughter of John Cockburn, a farm labourer, and Elizabeth Liddle.

She emigrated to Otago with her family in 1873 on the Zealandia.

The family lived in Cromwell for a year before moving to Queenstown where John worked as a gardener.

Sarah married John Salmond, a builder, on 7 April 1886 in Queenstown and they had eight children.

They lived in Queenstown where Sarah signed the suffrage petition.

One of their sons died in the First World War and another died the same year of pneumonia.

John died in 1940 and Sarah died on 18 October 1956, they are buried together in the Queenstown Cemetery.
