Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Sarah Bass was born about 1838 in Harlow, Essex, England – the daughter of Daniel Bass, an agricultural labourer, and Sarah Clements.

She married Thomas Undrill, a fireman on a locomotive, in 1867 and they had three children.

The family emigrated to Canterbury in 1874 on the Apelles and they had a further four children, one who died in early childhood.

When Sarah signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Bluff.

Sarah and Thomas took a trip to Britain in 1911 which was to 'extend over some months'.

Sarah died on 11 May 1920 and Thomas died in 1932.

Sarah’s obituary said she 'was beloved by all who knew her, for she was a genial, good-living Christian woman, and a valued member of the Methodist Church.'
