Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Sarah Ann Hamilton was born about 1836 in England. She arrived in New Zealand about 1851 and on 3 January 1853 she married Henry Petty Winchester at St Peters Church, Wellington.

Henry was a compositor and had come to New Zealand in 1850 to help start a newspaper in Christchurch. The family lived in Wellington for a time before shifting to Dunedin in 1864.

The couple had seven children, two dying at an early age, before Henry died in 1866 aged 35.

Sarah re-married in 1874 to Smyth Walker, a carter, and they had a further two children.

The family lived in Upper Rattray St, Dunedin where Smyth died in 1913, followed by Sarah Ann who died on 31 July 1924. They are buried in the Southern Cemetery beside Sarah’s first husband Henry Winchester.
