Sarah Beattie was born in 1874 in New Zealand – the daughter of James Beattie, a farmer, and Margaret Ann Whiteside.

When she signed the suffrage petition she was living with her family at Highcliff on the Otago Peninsula.

Sarah married William Octavius Harwood, a farmer, in 1898 - they had one daughter and they lived near Portobello on the Otago Peninsula.

William died in 1938 and Sarah died on 8 August 1966, they are buried together in the Portobello Cemetery.
