Sarah Jane Hollow was born in 1863 in Cornwall, England – the daughter of William Hollow, a farm labourer, and Jane Olds.

She emigrated to Otago with her family in 1874 on the Jessie Readman and they settled in the Waitaki District.

Sarah married Jeremiah Black, a labourer, in 1883 and they had eight children, one who died in infancy.

When she signed the suffrage petition the family were living at Ngapara in North Otago.

Sarah died on 25 December 1895, at the age of 30, she is buried in with their young son in the Georgetown Cemetery.

Jeremiah re-married the following year and had a further seven children. He died in 1947 and is buried in the Old Oamaru Cemetery.
