Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Sarah Sophia Adcock was born on 17 March 1842 in Launceston, Tasmania, Australia – the daughter of Stephen Watkin Adcock, a butcher, and Ann Meredith.

She married William Bransgrove, also a butcher, on 18 March 1860 in Launceston.

They had a son in 1861, the same year that William sailed on the Lucknow for Bluff.

Sarah and her son followed on the Annie Beaton in 1863.

The family settled in Invercargill and had a further two sons and a daughter.

William worked as a butcher until gold fever struck and they left for the West Coast.

They lived in Melbourne for a short time, where a son was born in 1872, returning to live in Pleasant Valley north of Dunedin where William ran a fellmongery business.

This was put into liquidation in 1876 and the family moved to Dunedin where a further two sons were born.

William again faced bankruptcy in 1889 and when Sarah signed the suffrage petition they were living in Great King St.

Sarah and William celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary in March 1910 and a Diamond Wedding anniversary in 1920.

Sarah died later that year on 30 July and William died in 1921. They are buried together in the Northern Cemetery.
