Sarah Milburn was born about 1859 in Durham, England. She had an illegitimate daughter in 1876 and the following year she married John Coatsworth. Two more children arrived before they emigrated to New Zealand on the Margaret Galbraith in 1879. Another two children were born in New Zealand.

John Coatsworth died at Alexandra St, Caversham in October 1883 closely followed by their infant son, Joseph, in December of the same year.

Sarah stayed in the Caversham area for the rest of her life. When she signed the petition she was living in Cargill Rd, in 1893 in Alexandra St (now Eastbourne St) and by 1928 she was living at 24 Baker St where she died on 23 March 1940. She is buried in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
