Sarah Hannah Blakeley was the second of five children of Reuben and Jane Blakeley. She was born at Russell Street, Batley, York on the 24th May 1857.

Sarah’s marriage to Frank Burnley took place the Zion Chapel in Batley on the 16th September 1876.  

They travelled to New Zealand on the ship Crusader with their three year old son Isaac. Leaving Plymouth on 18 December 1882 they arrived in Lyttleton on 22 March 1883. The family settled in Kaiapoi where Frank worked at the Kaiapoi Woollen Company. Their second child (Alice) was born here in 1885.

The family then moved to Petone where Frank’s occupation was stated as ‘Çloth Finisher’ at Petone Woollen Mills. Three more children were born in Lower Hutt. Lilly b. 1887; Frank b. 1889 and Ivy b. 1895.

Sarah Hannah died age 39 at Blackbridge, Lower Hutt on 19 December 1896 and is buried at Taita cemetery. Her death certificate states cause of death was General debility. Asthenia following Parturition.
