Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Sarah Swinerd was born in 1843 in Ashford, Kent, England – the daughter of Humphrey Swinerd, a jobbing gardener, and Matilda Hyder.

She married Richard Hall, a piledriver and brickmaker, in 1868 in Kent and they had three children, on who died in infancy, before they emigrated to Canterbury in 1874 on the Atrato.

They had a further seven children after their arrival and when Sarah signed the suffrage petition the family were living at Hoopers Inlet near Sandymount on the Otago Peninsula.

In later life they retired to live in Caversham where Sarah died on 25 December 1921 and Richard died in 1926.

They are buried together in the Broad Bay Cemetery.
