Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Sarah Jane Hendley was born in New Zealand in 1871 – the daughter of William Hendley and Jane Storey.

Sarah’s father worked as the caretaker of the Dunedin Cricket Club and was 'a victim to drink'.

In 1877 William appeared in court for disobeying a maintenance order 'to support his wife and family' and the following year he was bound over to keep the peace for using threatening language to Sarah’s mother.

In November 1878 Jane asked the court 'that three of her children be committed to the Industrial School.' William was in jail and Jane wanted to 'take a situation' – the children were committed for 12 months.

Sarah’s mother died in April 1879 after which the children were recommitted to the Industrial School to remain until 1886.

Sarah had a daughter in 1890 and in 1895 - they appear to have been brought up partly by her mother’s family.

She signed the suffrage petition in Mornington and was mentioned in her father’s will in 1895. After this time it unclear what happened to Sarah.
