Sarah Garrety was born about 1844, she was possibly the Sarah Gerighty aged 28 from Lanarkshire, Scotland who arrived in Otago in 1874 on the Invercargill.

She married Charles George Hodges, a labourer, in 1876 and they had five children.

When Sarah signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Kirkland Hill in Dunedin.

Sarah died at the Little Sisters of the Poor in Andersons Bay, Dunedin on 5 March 1920 and Charles also died there later the same year.

They are buried with their daughter in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
